What is eMAM?

eMAM™ is a media asset management platform that gives users powerful tools to find and use lightweight proxy or native resolution media from any number of local or cloud storage and archive systems. With scores of best-in-breed integrations, eMAM can provide complete integrated media workflows locally or in the cloud. eMAM can scale from a small system to one designed to meet the needs of the largest organizations.

Online Search Library

eMAM provides an online proxy library for all content accessible from any web browser or connected device. The library is one “pane of glass” for all content in all locations and systems. eMAM manages video, audio, graphic, documents, and any other digital file types. Metadata tags supplied by users or artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) can be used to find media. Users can preview and used media from any web browser.

Collaboration Tools

eMAM web interfaces can be used to create projects, assign media, mark, clip, and create timelines. Editors and artists can use integrated apps for craft editing and design with review and approval, media management, and other tools.

Sharing and Delivery Tools

Links to media can be shared by social media or branded emails. Media can be delivered in any required format to news, broadcast, and web streaming/publishing systems.

Storage and Archive Management

eMAM allows users to directly manages the original/native resolution content in any local or cloud location directly from the web interface. Content can be moved to different storage and archive tiers automatically or manually so organizations can optimize their storage use based on price and accessibility. eMAM works with industry leading archive systems to manage archived media on spinning discs, LTO libraries, ODA, and cloud systems.

MAM vs. PAM vs. DAM

All three of these system types help organizations manage and use digitized assets.

Production Asset Management (PAM) systems are designed on the creation of digital assets, focused on production and editing staffs. PAM systems tend to be localized in these departments. They are often too technical or too limited to be useful and accessible by other staff members, other departments, other locations, or by outside stakeholders. They are marked by tight integrations with editing and production systems, but they may lack other workflows. Some have cloud integrations.

Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems tend to be focused on tools for processing and handling text and graphical elements. They generally have rich tool sets for handling these assets, such as digital publishing and layout. They have limited functionality for video and may or may not make proxies of video content. Many have enterprise level scaling.

Media Asset Management (MAM) systems provide enterprise-wide access to content with full tool sets for all types of content. They generate proxy copies to allow for easy collaboration for video. eMAM has some PAM and DAM features, but it is primarily a MAM system.

Why do organizations need MAM?
Inefficiency

Redundant and manual processes resulting from many disconnected systems take too much time and effort for understaffed modern organizations. IT support and staff training for multiple systems is an additional cost and challenge.

Informational Silos

Content for an organization may be stored in many disconnected locations, so staff and customers may not be able to easily access important content, if they even know it exists. The organization may very well miss opportunities to repurpose and monetize its content.

Storage issues

Many organizations store content on hard drives, which link to only one computer, can crash, or can get lost at any time. Centralized storage provides a better solution for collaboration, but high-speed shared editing storage is expensive and quickly fills. Organizations need systems to move content to less expensive storage tiers and to long term archive to save money and better protect their content.

Poor control

Management may have limited ability to monitor and oversee multiple independent systems, resulting in poor oversight with limited or complicated reporting systems. An organization may lack one single point of truth, so branding information may be difficult to share and control. With multiple different systems, effective control over the use and distribution of content may also be problematic.

Delivery issues

Shipment of content on physical media results in high costs for duplication and shipping, with delivery delays and potential loss of content. Digital delivery of native resolution media may be slow, expensive, and problematic, but a MAM can allow processes to be faster and cheaper with proxy resolution copies for many needs and preconfigured delivery settings when native resolution media is needed.

Why eMAM?

A powerful tool for meeting a wide range of customer needs, eMAM puts organizations and their staff in control of their media.

Control Content

Digital content and its use are essential for any modern organization, so allowing all stakeholders use of appropriate material is mission critical.

Access Control
Users are assigned to user groups-often linked to roles within the organization-which are allowed access to select categories and subcategories. Users and user groups can be defined by LDAP/AD/SAML or within the eMAM system. eMAM has granular controls for media use and access for each user group. Assets can be assigned to categories and subcategories manually or through an automated workflow processes.

Authorized users can access the system from any standard web browser or from a tablet. The iOS iPAD app is available in the AppStore, while the Android tablet/ smartphone app can be found in the PlayStore. Most users use the web-based HTML “Director” interface. Most system functions are represented by widgets. Users can be assigned a workspace, while more technical users can build their own workspace(s) based on their needs and preferences.

Collaboration Empowerment
Editors and artists using the Adobe Creative Cloud can use the media and eMAM tools directly from extension panels inside their apps: Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Similar connections allow Avid and Adobe editors to collaborate. Non-editors can share media, mark, sub clip, and organize media from the web interface to share with craft editors.

Link Sharing Links for email review and approval with a video player can be sent from the Adobe Creative Cloud extension panels or from the web interface. Link recipients can mark a video, make general comments and label media as approved or disapproved, which can trigger notifications or processes in the system. To control access, external links expire after time or after use.

There are numerous features for sharing links, including branded multi-media emails, social media (Linked In, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube), embed links, and shareable URLs. Security settings include link expiration, usage limits, and authentication. Details are summarized in Appendix 1.

Control Processes

eMAM can help organizations control, streamline and automate workflows for greater efficiency.

Integrated workflows
The eMAM system uses API-level integrations with many third-party systems to power many integrated workflows. Users can start many combined technology workflow steps and processes directly from eMAM. These include transcoding, archive, media management, and quality control. For example, Telestream Vantage has a workflow designer that can design a complicated multistep automated workflow-the entire process can be triggered by eMAM users using drag, drop, and one-button select. Integrations are highlighted below and Appendix A-Technology Partners.

Ingest and Transfer: eMAM has integrated with many transcoding, encoding and ingest technologies: ffmpeg (open source), Adobe, Amazon, Drastic, Elemental, Cinedeck, Harmonic, Mog, and Telestream. Command line interfaces can be easily set up for eMAM to work with other systems. In order to speed ingest and delivery of large files, eMAM can work with UDP technologies from Unlimi-Tech (File Catalyst), Aspera, and Signiant or with S3 file acceleration.

Edit: eMAM features a built-in extension panel in Adobe Premiere Pro. For Apple Final Cut, eMAM can use XML exchange for metadata and projects. For Avid Media Composer, eMAM can work with project and assets exported from the system, or can use AAF in connection with Telestream Vantage or Marquis Medway.

Storage: eMAM is storage agnostic. eMAM has been tested with many cloud and local systems: Amazon, Backblaze, Cloudian, Dell EMC, Facilis, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Quantum, Scale Logic, Spectra Logic, and Wasabi.

Cloud: eMAM can use cloud servers, storage, and processes from Amazon, Dell Boomi, Google, IBM, Lucid Link, Microsoft, NetApp, Oracle, Qvest, Teradici, and Zapier.

Archive: eMAM has seamless integrations with most of the leading archive management systems: 1Beyond, Amazon, Archiware, Atempo, Blackbaze, Cloudian, DellEMC, HGST, Hitachi, IBM, Microsoft, NetApp, Oracle, QStar, Quantum, SGL, Spectra Logic, and Xen Data.

Sharing and publishing: eMAM can send links to common social media sites Linked In, Twitter, and Facebook. eMAM can publish to online publishing platforms Brightcove, IBM Cloud Video (Ustream), Katapy, and Muvi.

Automated workflows
eMAM can make any number of workflows from the SuperAdmin configuration interface. If certain conditions are met, then one or more processes are started. These include reassigning content to a different category (with different permissions), delivering or archiving media, or sending notifications. eMAM can also trigger third-party systems working at the server or desktop level.

APIs
eMAM is built on standard Microsoft .NET and SQL Server technologies, which ensures the long-term stability of the system, shortens development times, and opens up standard tools for system use.

RESTful and SOAP and web services for interfaces ensures easy integration with other systems or custom interfaces. The eMAM digital library and eMAM functions can be used to power a customized web portal, whether designed by the Empress team, a third party/system integrator, or a client team.

XML
eMAM can accept XML side cars at ingest to get metadata from third party systems. eMAM can also send configurable XML with delivery, including metadata and any type of information from eMAM including JSON files.

Reporting
Beyond included reporting tools and live dashboards, the database can be easily accessed by Microsoft SQL Report Builder or standard third-party tools. eMAM staff, other companies, or customer staff can write scripts to trigger workflows or to generate reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

Drop Folders
eMAM can use any number of drop/watch folders to easily set up workflows with other systems.

Control Costs

Although global demand for media has skyrocketed, budgets in broadcast media and many other sectors struggle to keep up with the needs of stakeholders. eMAM offers great options for payments, competitive pricing, and a focus on controlling the total cost of ownership for its customers. At the same time, the system is future proof, incorporating the latest technologies to prevent obsolescence.

Proxy workflows eMAM’s core use of proxy copies for collaboration, markup, review, and other uses minimizes costs associated with the processing and transmission of native resolutions copies and with unneeded storage of multiple copies. This is especially critical as demand for content grows and as file sizes grow due to increasing video resolutions-from SD to HD to 4K and beyond. Working with proxy copies saves time and money.

Complete Life Cycle Support Because eMAM supports the complete asset lifecycle: ingest, production, use, and final archive, organizations do not need to purchase and maintain multiple systems. eMAM supports third-party systems needed for particular workflow steps (e.g Telestream for video transcoding and processing), making a completely integrated system that can reach over geographical and departmental boundaries. Different groups and different locations do not need the additional overhead of running multiple systems: with eMAM, they can use one system to foster collaboration and minimize costs.

Operational efficiency-searching
Metadata is the heart of a MAM system. Tags and labels for media allow them to be searched and reused. Because eMAM provides a single interface for all media with powerful search features, organizations can save on wasted labor costs of staff searching for content. In addition to basic file properties and technical data (e.g. camera data) about assets, eMAM can have an unlimited number of custom metadata fields. Users groups can be assigned relevant groups of metadata for their use. Public and private search filters can quickly find needed material. eMAM can maintain a disciplined metadata scheme so all media can be found by mandating a minimum number of labels for all media, avoiding misspellings, and controlling taxonomy (e.g. was the leader of Libya Gaddafi, Kaddafi, or Qadhafi?).

Content can be tagged at ingest from the eMAM feeder or from a purpose-built logging interface. Third party information can enter as XML. Users can also use the web interface to tag media after ingest. Some or all of the media can be automatically tagged by any of the leading artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) systems with extracted metadata stored in the eMAM database and displayed in the transcript and insights widgets. Although results vary and organizations should budget for AI training, automated tagging allows organizations to save money on human tagging and the possibility of using archive or current content that was never usefully tagged.

Active archive
Power users, especially video editors, need a fast network connection to high performance media storage. This is very expensive for organizations to maintain, especially as video resolutions and media demand grow. Busy staff will be reluctant to remove media used by others or too rushed, moving quickly to work on the next project. Organizations are left with huge storage bills or the challenge of sorting and moving poorly labelled content.

Moving media to an archive system locally or in the cloud allows organizations to store tremendous amounts of content much cheaper. eMAM can provide editors and artists with “one button” archive for projects, moving all media to the archive, and making a copy if needed to ensure that other staff projects remain online. Media can also be archived manually, automatically if not used, or through a workflow trigger. Proxy copies and metadata for archived media are kept in eMAM so users can still search and preview media, with one button to restore to current storage.

Scaling
eMAM is based on a service-oriented architecture, so different systems can work together in the same system. eMAM is based on Windows Server and SQL Server technology, which can cluster to meet the needs of the largest organizations. eMAM was built for enterprise class demands, with settings and configuration options to power major organizations.

eMAM licenses standard bundles of servers, workflow features, users and units. Organizations can purchase a system appropriate for current needs and then add additional licenses as their needs may grow. They save money be not overpaying for unneeded eMAM licenses or infrastructure.

Scaling is especially easy in the public cloud. Organizations can deploy some or all of an eMAM system in the cloud or just store some media in the cloud. Cloud systems can be scaled very easily as needed. eMAM Cloud is a cloud-first product, so scaling is even easier. Organizational staff or service partners can make needed change in infrastructure on which eMAM Cloud Platform is deployed. eMAM Cloud Service is even easier it scales automatically to meet demand.

Configuration
All installed eMAM systems feature the Super Admin Console, which allows organizations, eMAM staff, or system integrators to configure profile settings including ingest, storage, archive, and delivery. As an organization changes hardware, networking, and systems over time, changes can be quickly made.

Many competing MAM systems require extensive customization, even for basic workflows. The professional services required makes them expensive and time consuming to setup. Later, even basic changes may require additional professional services, so the total cost of ownership can explode.

Reduced staff costs
One of the key benefits of eMAM is its simple interfaces, which cut time and money spent for training and support, while maximizing acceptance in the organization. Because eMAM can manage the complete life cycle of digital assets and work seamlessly across departmental and geographic barriers, fewer systems may be needed to support organizational needs. Cloud options can reduce the needs for both hardware and software inside an organization and the staff needed to support them.

Pricing
eMAM has a well-defined product line of installed and cloud products to meet the budgets and needs of different customers. The eMAM system is inherently scalable and flexible, so it can change and grow as needs change over time without the danger of obsolescence.

Using onshore/offshore staffing in the United States and India, eMAM can work closely with customers and provide excellent value for both the price of the system as well as support, additional services, and any required customizations.

eMAM Cloud has predefined pricing with options for organizations to enjoy any preestablished infrastructure discounts they may have received from cloud partners.

Control Cloud

Public/private cloud and multi-cloud
Organizations can enjoy the benefits of the cloud for scaling, accessibility, support, and innovation from public and/or private cloud suppliers. eMAM’s service-oriented architecture allows organizations to use different systems linked together into one system. This flexibility allows organizations to use the platform that best meets their needs for tools, pricing, and deployment while minimizing egress expenses of content to other systems.

Hybrid: local and cloud
With its service-oriented architecture, eMAM allows organizations to run different parts of the eMAM system in different systems, including a mix of local and cloud systems. Although many organizations are moving toward cloud processes, many things are still best done on local systems, including

  • Legacy systems that are not cloud compatible
  • A high-volume archive that is only accessed locally
  • High resolution camera source files that are difficult to move quickly to the cloud
  • Systems, processes, or organizations that require specialized security settings
  • Long-form high resolution videos that are edited locally in native resolution
  • Geographic areas that have limited internet connections
  • Media that is used repeatedly in a particular location
Unforeseen or unpredictable egress charges may limit the appeal of a full cloud system, but eMAM gives organizations the flexibility to control these costs by linking media storage with the systems and locations where they would be used.

Marketplace
With eMAM Cloud, organizations can run a system directly from the cloud. Initially available in the AWS Marketplace, it will become available in other ecosystems in the near future. Some organizations want staff or partners to control cloud services and spending. They may have discounted pricing or already established cloud infrastructure for use. eMAM Cloud Platform is a PaaS (platform as a service) that allows the flexibility to use eMAM directly on their preestablished cloud infrastructure or new infrastructure they want to manage. Other organizations want total freedom to use the system without staff overhead. eMAM Cloud Service is a SaaS (software as a service) that gives them complete flexibility to use as little or as much storage, processing, etc as they may need-when they need it. eMAM and its cloud partners will manage the infrastructure and bill the customer accordingly.

Workflows
Acquisition

eMAM Capture allows organizations to work with live ingest, tagging and clipping media as it comes into the system.

H.264 MP4 proxies for sharing in eMAM can be generated from any camera, from an integrated local or server-based transcoder, or a command line trigger. Content can be dragged and dropped to the web uploader or locally into the eMAM Feeder from any Windows or Mac desktop or uploaded using the HTML5 uploader. eMAM preserves complex camera card folder structure. The process can be tracked from the Feeder and web interface dashboards. If the internet connection is lost, then the system will continue the process from where it stopped.

At ingest, users can enter tags and metadata fields, some of which can be required, and organize content into projects and categories. Metadata can also be entered after ingest from the web interface or can brought in by XML sidecars during media ingest. Artificial Intelligence systems, like IBM Watson, can be used to tag some or all of the ingested media.

The advanced Adobe Creative Cloud integration allows users to use Adobe Premiere Pro for ingest. The powerful Adobe Media Encoder behind Premiere will automatically make proxies for eMAM use. Media can also be exported from Avid Media Composer or Apple Final Cut for eMAM use.

UDP file acceleration based on File Catalyst, Signiant, or Aspera can be used to speed the transfer of large files to cloud or on-premise locations and S3 file acceleration speeds cloud uploads.

Editing

Editing was traditionally done only in dedicated edit bays by editors. eMAM opens up editing for worldwide collaboration. The online eMAM library provides access to the entire library of current and historical content so editors and non-editors alike can find the best material for the current project, whether it is onsite, in the archive, on the shelf, in the cloud, or in another location.

eMAM users can search and preview media, organizing clips into projects from the web or tablet interfaces. They can also sub clip, mark, annotate, and make sequences. Editors and artists can use integrated Adobe Creative Cloud extension panels for Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to access projects created from eMAM users and the entire library of eMAM content, along with the eMAM tools. They can check out or localize native resolution or mezzanine edit versions of media. Using mezzanine versions for editing can speed media transfer to ease traffic on a local network or allow editing for media stored remotely or on the cloud. Finished sequences and media added locally can be shared back into eMAM.

From the extension panel or the eMAM interface, users can send review and approval emails with a video player. Recipients can add comments and markers and approve/disapprove workflows, which can trigger messaging or workflows from the system.

After final approvals, editors can finish a project by conforming with native resolution media. If it is stored in the cloud, then this can be done with a remote cloud desktop using a cloud service or a Teradici PCOIP connection.

Distribution and Publishing

Delivery: Finished content can be delivered to any number of destinations with transcoding on demand through FTP or with UDP file acceleration. Playable links to proxy copies can be sent as mixed media eBIN or eSHARE messages and as shareable URL links or HTML player code for website insertion on blogs, social media sites and websites. With approval, eBIN recipients and eMAM users can download media in any of the preselected formats available. Collaboration and digital delivery directly from eMAM are simple and inexpensive because users can:

  • Avoid shipping hard drives, tape, and DVDs globally. This reduces costs and provides quicker responses. eMAM transcodes on the fly and for delivery in multiple locations in multiple formats.
  • Prepare demo reels or promotional campaigns with videos, audios, graphics, and documents together, and then send them to clients as emails for instant preview and optional download. Recipients can receive and use the content on any connected device.
  • Save time by enabling users and clients to download content in their preferred format.

eMAM can also manage the publishing, sale, and promotion to third-party systems. eMAM or customer technical staff can preconfigure delivery profile destinations with XML side cars with required metadata and other parameters. Users need only change a metadata field or drag, drop, and select. eMAM allows an integrated experience for storage, processing, and publishing assets to minimize training, to minimize support, and maximize productivity. Depending on the destination platform, eMAM can bring back analytics from third-party platforms. eMAM can save organizations money by allowing them to selectively store and publish content in expensive cloud platforms- maintaining the bulk of content in cheaper localized storage or archive until needed. Supported destinations include:
  1. CDNs. Content delivery networks power the mass distribution and download of content by storing and sending content in multiple cloud storage locations. These include Akamai and Limelight as well as tools from within cloud platforms including Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM.
  2. Custom web sites. eMAM users can quickly publish one or many assets with a video player to an existing website. A team from eMAM, the customer, or a third party can also develop a new interactive portal with rich media support.
  3. Social media. eMAM users with permission can quickly generate embeddable links for publishing to popular platforms Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
  4. Distribution partners including market leaders Netflix, Hulu, Direct TV, iTunes, and more.
  5. OVPs and cloud services including BrightCove, IBM Cloud Video (UStream), Katapy, and Muvi. These platforms offer tools for channel publishing to web and multiple channels including Roku and FireTV, interface customization, managing subscriptions and ad insertions, distribution control and analytics, and adaptive bit rate streaming for a great customer experience.
  6. Packaging and transcoding systems. Telestream Vantage with its Post Producer and other integrated offerings can coordinate the delivery of multiple delivery packets to multiple destinations, with correct bumpers, closed captioning, language tracks, and graphic bugs.
  7. Newsroom and broadcast playout systems incorporate eMAM media into existing or new stories for placement into the rundown and broadcast schedule.

Storage and Archive Management

eMAM can provide powerful and affordable solutions to power storage and archive needs.

Storage:
eMAM is a full media asset management system, which can manage content in multiple locations and types: DAS, NAS, SAN, cloud storage, and archive. eMAM is agnostic about manufacturers, so organizations can choose the best solution to fit the needs for performance and budget. eMAM can manage different storage tiers, allowing an organization to minimize spending or expensive primary storage while preserving easy access to all content.

Archive:
eMAM can manually archive any number of assets, projects, or categories. The system can automatically do so for inactive files after a certain number of days, or once a certain condition is met. eMAM can archive editing projects, completed material, or original camera files from an Adobe extension panel or the web interface. eMAM will make copies of media used in other editing projects before archive to ensure needed media does not go offline. eMAM retains all metadata and proxy copies for archived files, so all media can be quickly found for future needs. Users can restore content from an extension panel or the web interface, with partial restores available from supported third party systems.

Offline:
If native content is stored on the shelf, staff or customers can do an online search and preview to find content and generate an order or notice as needed. The archive system can notify a tape librarian to install or mount the barcoded drive or tape.

AI tagging:
Organizations can now use artificial intelligence/machine learning tools to provide meaningful tags and markers for content previously poorly labelled. Automated indexing can be done for select media to control costs while making the key media accessible.

eMAM Features and Functions

eMAM has a wide range of features. A particular user may not have access to some of the features, depending on allowed permissions for the user group(s) to which the user is a member and on which tools have been implemented in his or her eMAM system.

General Features

Search: Simple and advanced search capabilities can be performed on a variety of search criteria using wild cards and Boolean logic. eMAM keeps information (metadata) for all content in the database, so users can find assets in near line storage, offline storage, storage in other locations, archive, or on physical media. Advanced searches allow users to search based on a series of parameters, which can be saved for future searches as search filters. Marker searches allow users to search for markers made somewhere on an asset. Conditional searches and filters allow users to further narrow searches, which can be saved for personal or general reuse later.
Admin: Unit admin users can set user permissions and metadata and other features from the Admin widget. Computer and network settings are configured in the Super Admin Console. Dashboard: Users can monitor processes in the system to check their progress, resubmit failed jobs, and so forth.
Browse: The system shows a thumbnail of all assets or just those that match the recent search criteria. Users can click to choose an asset, and then perform various functions listed below or choose a group of assets for any of the asset group functions.

Single Asset Features


Preview:
Proxy preview limits the amount of time and money spent on transmission and download of digital media or shipping of physical media. Low resolution H.264 proxies are fast and easy to view from anywhere on any connected device. J-K-L keys can be used to step through videos frame-by-frame. The preview player has options for video quality selection, audio track selection, and tools (described below) for annotation, markers, and sub clipping. Users can annotate individual frames of a video with text, circles, and other shapes to share with other users.

Metadata:
eMAM stores a range of metadata about each asset to power search. Embedded metadata is information about the asset that comes from the camera or the basic information about the asset, e.g., video frame rate. Custom metadata are metadata fields defined for the use of the organization. They can be put into groups for use by select user groups and also grouped into sets. Users can also make any number of private or public tags on assets.

Transcript:
Speech to text results from third-party AI systems are displayed here and used to power search. There are options to import a transcript from another source, export the transcript, and correct the transcript.

Insights:
Other AI indexing result are displayed here: facial recognition, brand recognition, key words, and more. There is an option to train the system for unknown faces.

History:
eMAM stores the entire history of what is done to an asset within the system. The asset history can be downloaded or printed.

Ingest:
The ingest widget gives users access to the web uploader and eMAM Feeder. Media can be drag and dropped directly to the uploader. The eMAM Feeder can be downloaded to run on a Mac or Windows desktop to scan or drag media into eMAM locally.

Keyframe:
Users can choose which keyframe (image) of an asset is shown in the browse window. Users may choose private keyframes or public keyframes, shown to all users.

File Version:
Users can upload additional versions of an asset. They can designate one version as the face version-the default one shown to users. From the version widget, users can look through the different versions and see where they are stored (cloud, local, archive, etc.).

Comment and Ratings:
Users can make any number of general comments about an asset. Comments can be used to find assets. Ratings can be used to quickly share thoughts with others. The comments widget collects comments from the web interface along with comments made from eBINs and approval links.

Markers:
Users can use the video preview player to find a point of interest to mark. Markers can be labelled in the marker widget. Markers appear on the browse window as red marks. Marker labels can be found using the marker search function. Markers made in eMAM will appear on the editing time line in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Subclip (plus Partial Restore): This feature puts start (mark in) and stop (mark out) points along the length of a video. This can be used to send information to an editor as an Edit Decision List (EDL) or can be used to generate a new version of a video asset (subclip), made of only the marked parts for delivery to the required destination in the needed format. For an asset that is archived using certain archive systems, this feature can be used to partially restore only the selected parts of a clip.

Timeline plus preview:
Users can drag any number of assets and subclips together to make an editing timeline/storyboard. Users can preview this timeline and share with Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro editors for craft editing.

Compare:
Users can watch two video clips at the same time to detect any differences.

Asset Grouping

From browse, users can select several assets to process together or group them into categories or projects, on which functions can be performed.

Category:
Assets can be organized into any number of categories or subcategories to which user groups may have restricted access and permissions. eMAM can process all assets of a category, e.g. archive an entire category. Any number of categories and subcategories can be defined without duplicating the media.

Project:
Assets can be grouped together into any number of projects and bins (subcategories) without duplicating the media. Projects can be shared with other users. They can be exported to editors or artists. eMAM has an advanced integration with Adobe Premiere including project check in, check out, and project locking.

Asset Group Features

Project Version:
eMAM tracks multiple versions of a project. Users can upload additional versions of an asset. They can designate one version as the face version-the default one shown to users. From the version widget, users can look through the different versions to track changes.

Project export:
Users can export a project to an editor using XML export to Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere and other Creative Cloud apps. Premiere users can also use the built-in extension panel to directly access all eMAM projects, bins (subprojects), (sub)categories and sequences with markers.

Import metadata:
Metadata from third party sources can be added to a group of assets.

Update asset:
Information about a group of assets can be updated together. Order: One or a group of assets can be ordered for delivery or fulfillment. The orders will be sent as a detailed email for the appropriate person or department to complete. Orders are useful if the user does not have access to the native content or if the native content is not online. Asset orders can be generated from the eBIN system.

Review and Approval:
Users can review and share one or many assets via branded emails. The approver receives an email proxy link to review material. This proxy link can be set to expire after a specified date, or when the approver accepts or rejects the asset(s), whichever comes first.

eBIN:
Individual asset links can be grouped into an eBIN. Items in the eBIN can be sent as a multimedia proxy email with customized branding, different tabs for video/audio/other files, and numerous security options.

Embed:
Users can create a link to share a video with the video player by email or social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn). Users can also get HTML code to embed the video with the player on any website.

eSHARE:
Users can send mixed media much like an eBIN, but they can choose to require recipient authentication. This function allows optional user ratings, likes, and download ability. Beyond email, messages can also be sent to social media sites Twitter, Facebook and Linked In.

Download:
Authorized users can download one or more assets from the eMAM managed storage to a local desktop or other destination. Available formats for download are pre-specified and preloaded in the system (native, mezzanine, and proxy formats). This can occur with UDP file acceleration. Downloads will occur from the most appropriate (closest) storage location.

Deliver:
Users can deliver the asset to appropriate locations or destinations with transcoding to the appropriate format/codec with metadata. Delivery profiles are usually preset for an organization by system administrators.

Archive/Restore:
Selected assets or an entire project or category can be pushed to the archive. The database will retain metadata and proxy copies of all archived media, so these can still be found by search. Assets can be automatically archived if they are not used for a length of time. Archived assets can be restored manually, or users will be asked to restore an asset if it is required for delivery or download.

eMAM Interfaces
Director

This is the key user interface, included with all eMAM systems. It has all of the features needed by most users on a daily basis. It is a flexible, widget interface based on HTML 5, to fit to any screen. The Director interface has language localization, so the language of the interface will match the language for the browser for many languages. Individual users or user groups can have predefined workspaces to optimize their activities or use widgets to build their ideal workspace(s).

Tablet

These iOS and Android native applications provide most of the functionalities of the eMAM system except for admin functionalities. These apps can be downloaded from the appropriate source, but then will need to be configured to work with the user’s appropriate eMAM system.

Extension Panel

Extension panels are available for Adobe Creative Cloud apps Premiere, After Effect, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to facilitate media movement while providing eMAM tools to editors and artists directly from their workspace.

Feeder

This native JNLP application works on any Mac or Windows desktop. Dragging and dropping content into the Feeder triggers ingest after the content is tagged and put into appropriate categories or projects. This application will work locally if the internet connection is lost during upload, continuing the upload when a connection is reestablished. It also has a built-in dashboard to monitor progress.

Desk Link

This node.JS application works on any desktop facilitates download and ensures media retains the correct file structure.

Super Admin

This admin interface is used to configure system settings, such as storage and ingest profiles. Super Admin users can take advantage of the large array of configuration settings to change the system parameters as needed without customization. The Workflow tab can set up automatic processes and/or notifications if one or more conditions are met.

Product Line

eMAM has five product lines: eMAM Vault, eMAM Publish, eMAM Workgroup, eMAM Enterprise, and eMAM Cloud.

eMAM Vault

eMAM Vault provides complete archive and storage management with most of the features of the eMAM system. eMAM Vault runs on one or two Windows servers. It includes licensing for 10 active defined users. It offers storage and archive management from most commonly used systems locally or in the cloud. There are no limits on the number of files or the size of the supported library. Users can use partial file restore with supported archive systems. Users can search media for download or delivery with transcoding to any location.

eMAM Publish

eMAM Publish adds additional tools for sharing finished media. These include review and approval, social media sharing, and branded eBIN emails. eMAM Publish usually uses two servers: one for transcoding and one for streaming.

eMAM Workgroup

eMAM Workgroup includes all of the features of eMAM, including production asset management for the collaborative production of media. There is an option to add additional business units, essentially separate systems with different branding, users, and content within the same database to support organizations with different divisions or different external customers. eMAM Workgroup includes licensing for 25 active defined users and is usually run on two servers, one for ingest/transcoding (video processing) and the other for web services (collaboration). In addition to purchasing a permanent license, organizations can subscribe for one year at a time.

eMAM Enterprise

The flagship product, eMAM Enterprise has software installed on multiple servers to provide for redundancy and scale. eMAM Enterprise supports all features of eMAM with unlimited business units. Additional server modules can be set up to support the enterprise level demands of the largest organizations. eMAM Enterprise is available for purchase or for annual subscription.

eMAM Cloud

This public cloud product line is ordered directly from a cloud ecosystem, first launching with the AWS Marketplace. Organizations will either provide their own infrastructure and services with the cloud provider (eMAM Cloud Platform-PaaS) or will have eMAM and the cloud provider manage everything (eMAM Cloud Service-SaaS).

Media and Entertainment Companies

These organizations work with very large video files that need to be quickly processed, shared, edited, and delivered. Integration with a series of technology systems is needed to ensure a best-of-breed integrated and streamlined workflow, especially as file sizes increase with ever greater resolution.

Acquisition:
A drag and drop into eMAM Feeder ingests content from the desktop. The system preserves the camera folder structure. In eMAM Feeder, users tag media and organize them into categories and projects. The ingest process can be tracked from the Feeder dashboard, or the eMAM dashboard. If the user loses an internet connection, then the system will continue the process once a connection is reestablished. Users can also use local editing and transcoding systems to generate proxies, tag content, etc. Additional tagging and logging can occur in the eMAM system through the web interface or from leading AI systems. Content can also be ingested from the web uploader, from watch folders, or from third party integrated systems.

Post Production:
eMAM users can generate projects, mark, tag, subclip, and generate sequences to share with editors, so now non-editors can be involved in the editing process from any connected device. A built-in extension panel for Adobe Premiere Pro and other Creative Cloud apps allows full access to all current and historical eMAM managed content within the editing desktop. FCP exchange allows use by Final Cut editors. Avid editors can use eMAM to store and share clips, sequences, or projects. eMAM can use Telestream and Marquis systems for integration with Avid editing projects.

Review/Approval:
Editors can send a rendered clip for email approval or an entire project with stills, scripts, notes, and more as an eBIN or eSHARE of mixed media branded email.

Delivery:
Finished content can be delivered to any number of destinations with transcoding on demand with file acceleration. Playable links to proxy copies can be sent as eBIN messages, as shareable URL links, sent to social media and publishing sites, or HTML player code for website insertion. With approval, eBIN and eSHARE recipients and eMAM users can download in any of the preselected formats available.

Archive:
eMAM users can easily manually archive any number of assets, projects, or categories, or automatically for inactive files. Archived assets could be editing projects, completed material, or original camera files. eMAM can also archive directly from the Adobe Premiere panel. eMAM retains all metadata and proxy copies for archived files. Users can partially restore content using supported middleware systems.

Marketing and Public Relations

Engaging customers and staff with video is the key to modern campaigns, but processing, managing, and publishing the content can be an challenge. eMAM has complete support for the production and post-production processes as described above, while allowing other stakeholders input into the process.

The eMAM web interface can provide an intuitive branded microsite for clients and non-technical staff to access content from any connected device for email and social media sharing. eMAM is built on web services APIs, so it can be easily be used to power needed video workflows behind any web portal.

With an online library for all current and historical content, users can easily find the best materials for current requirements regardless of location. Users can collaborate, share, and deliver content. eMAM manages the storage on premise, in the cloud, and in the archive to power workflow processes and then deliver using social media, video platforms, CDNs to any device and any system required.

eMAM can provide one point of truth for global branding. Users can have restricted access to nonapproved assets. Outdated branding can be quickly removed from circulation though the unified brand portal in a few clicks.

eMAM has a set of included reports and live dashboards to measure responses. Using standard Microsoft SQL database technology, custom reporting can be easily generated from the eMAM system or third-party reporting tools.

Government

In the face of growing demand for video for the military, security and training purposes, government agencies need powerful and secure video solutions to meet their missions.

eMAM can provide great flexibility to meet the current and future needs of government agencies. eMAM can run on any Windows Server and supports almost any storage system. The same interface can provide access to content from any number of locations.

Beyond the standard Microsoft security features, eMAM has granular permission settings to restrict access and virtually every system feature for each asset category and user group. There are over two dozen permission settings possible for each category. eMAM can define user groups, or they can be defined by LDAP/Active Directory/SAML settings. Users will see only those features and assets they are allowed to use.

With Microsoft Server and SQL Server clustering, the system can scale enormously. Agencies can deploy a system to meet the current needs and can expand it later as needed to meet future needs without any migration or obsolescence.

eMAM is integrated with many best-of-breed technologies to provide integrated systems. With RESTful and SOAP APIs, it can easily integrate with other current or future systems.

Education

The chalkboard has given way to the modern interactive media experience, so the modern educator needs powerful tools to share information with students and colleagues. Using proxy copies in eMAM minimizes network traffic, redundant storage, and processing requirements. Active archive management allows access to the complete wealth of historical digital information for current requirements while minimizing current storage requirements. eMAM system can easily integrate with other systems to make a best-of-breed integrated combined solution.

No longer does somebody raise their hand (unless they want to do it virtually over a web presentation). Digital collaboration and social media allow content to be quickly shared and consumed.

For high school and college sports teams, the sports fan base extends well beyond the stadium. Sports fans can access current and historical game footage, additional media, and stats about the athletes. The eMAM system can be used to power a branded portal to provide an interactive fan experience.
